Istead Rise Scout Group
Updated: Dec 13, 2019
In 2017, after a nine year absence, scouts in Istead Rise returned to their original home.
Members of 1st Istead Rise were forced to move out of their hut in Downs Road, Istead Rise nine years prior to the reopening after it was deemed unsafe by users.
Since then, the group ran from Hopehill Scout Campsite in Meopham for almost a decade.
Following years of fundraising efforts, donations and grant support, scouts in the area can now return to their former home, which was originally built in the 1960s.
On Sunday the hut was reopened following a £185,000 refurbishment so the site now has a main hall, kitchen, toilet facilities with disabled access, a small office and storage space.
Several charitable organisations donated to the cause, including £90,000 from Alpha Foundation, the charitable arm of finance business Kuflink.
Speaking at the opening on Harwinder Singh from the foundation said: “The scout hut has been an important part of the community for decades, so to be able to re-open this vital local facility after nine years of closure is brilliant.”
